Christina is a United States National and World Amateur boxing champion. She boxed at the sport's lightest weight division: 95 pounds. At 5'3", her height served as a distinct advantage.
As the 2008 Olympics neared, the anticipation for women's boxing to be included as an Olympic sport for the first time in its history was monumental. Finally, there would be gender equality in Olympic boxing. The excitement and the preparation intensified for what was expected to amount to a historical moment for the sport.
However, it wasn't meant to be. In 2005, on her birthday, it was announced that the International Olympic Committee had yet again, not voted for women's boxing to be included in the Olympic Games after much anticipation and speculation. She was left to carve out a new path.
Christina's embodiment of being a university honors graduate (University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Class of 2002) and an elite boxer has garnered international media as she is so uniquely defined. Educated. Boxer. Woman. Entrepreneur. While the adjectives may seem contrasting, for Christina, they in fact complement each other. "I calculate the moves like a chess match in the ring, yet in the classroom and in business, I also have to calculate the moves."
She explains, "One of my inspirations is Roberto Duran. His intensity combined with his boxing was magical. He came to see me immediately after my first professional fight. His words. His spirit. It was a truly inspiring moment that I will never forget."
